Professor of International Law He is a longtime United Nations diplomat and the former president of the Republic of Slovenia (2007 to 2012). From 1984 to 1992, he was a member of the United Nations Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities as an independent expert and became the first Slovene ambassador to the United Nations, from 1992 to 2000. Between 2000-2005 he was UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs. He was president of the UN Security Council in 1998, and in 1999. He is also a former member of the U.N. Human Rights Committee. In the 2016 UN Secretary General election, Dr. Türk was nominated as a candidate. He has published more than 100 articles in various law journals and books. He is visiting professor of international law at Columbia University in New York City. He is also Chairman of the Global High Level Panel on Water and Peace developing nations.
