A Personal Farewell to Iván Vitányi – by Ferenc Miszlivetz

“Our meeting was decisive. In September 1986, after a long delay, I was given permission to participate as a member of the Hungarian delegation to the World Congress of Sociology in New Delhi. I was sitting next to an elderly, taciturn, self-absorbed gentleman with whom we did, after a while, get to talking. He was talking about his new book, the European paradigm, and I was, I suppose, talking about the sociology of militarism, the vicious spiral of the East-West arms race, and the growing European peace movement, on which I was about to give a lecture.

From then on, he was by my side in everything I did, and our lives were intertwined for a quarter of a century.” (Ferenc Miszlivetz)
