I was sitting next to an elderly, taciturn, self-absorbed gentleman with whom we did, after a while, get to talking. He was talking about his new book, the European paradigm, and I was, I suppose, talking about the sociology of militarism, the vicious spiral of the East-West arms race, and the growing European peace movement, on which I was about to give a lecture.
