A Medieval Fortress at 16 Chernel Street

Built in the 14th century, this historic tower served as a corner bastion of the city wall during times of war, safeguarding the city’s defenses. As part of a medieval castle complex, the Old Tower held a strategic role as the innermost core, providing a last line of defense for the castle’s army. Over the centuries, the tower served various purposes, including residential quarters, a pantry, and possibly a prison. Renovated in 1965 and as part of the KRAFT program in 2015, it now stands as one of the buildings belonging to the Institute of Advanced Studies Kőszeg, hosting educational activities, lectures, and exhibitions.
