After graduating from high school, Ferenc Tar was admitted to the Kossuth Lajos University of Debrecen, where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in history and geography. He taught for a year in Kazincbarcika, then in 1981, he became a historian-museologist at the Balaton Museum in Keszthely.
Since 1995 he has been working as a teacher at the Bibó István Alternative Secondary School in Hévíz.
Since the beginning of the 1980s, he has been interested in historical research on Lake Balaton, Keszthely, and its surroundings. He was the editor-in-charge of the Balaton local history journal PELSO and founding editor of the regional journal Pannon Tükör, published in 1995.
