József Fülöp

As a visual communication designer, he graduated from MOME’s predecessor, the Hungarian College of Applied Arts, in 1991, and then obtained an MA degree in animation design from the same institution in 1995.

As a designer, he created the visual identity of animation studios and television channels. As a director, he created animated commercials, animated shorts, and interactive content. He designed characters for animated series and created illustrations for domestic and international magazines.

He has been a lecturer at MOME (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) since 2001, where he led animation programs from 2005 to 2020. He is the author of the accredited syllabi for bachelor’s (BA) and master’s (MA) degree programs in animation in Hungary.

He obtained his doctorate in 2007, his habilitation in 2011, and has been a professor at MOME since September 2013.

He was rector of MOME for ten years, from 2014 to 2024.

As a producer of animated films, he has achieved significant success at domestic and international festivals. His productions have won awards at Annecy, Cannes, and the Berlinale, among others. Further successes include a Cartoon d’Or nomination in 2007, an Academy Award nomination in 2014, a European Film Award nomination in 2023, an Annie Award nomination in 2024, and a Crystal Bear award at the Berlinale in 2025. He has been a member of the European Film Academy since 2025.

His research focuses on the development of the moving image creative processes in light of the emergence of disruptive technologies, the use of animation as a transformative tool in scientific communication, and the practice of mapping and modeling reality.
