About Us

János Rechnitzer

János Rechnitzer was born in Hédervár (Hungary) in 1952. He is a professor emeritus at the Széchenyi István University Doctoral School of Regional- and Business Administration Sciences.

He graduated as an economist (MSc from University of Pécs 1975) and Doctor of Economics (University of Pécs 1978). He received his candidacy PhD degree in 1985., the candidacy (Doctor of Science in Geography) from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1995 and his habilitation from the Janus Pannonius University, Pécs in 1999.

In 1986, he founded the West Hungary Scientific Department of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Győr, where he was the director until 2008. He is currently a research professor emeritus at the Centre of Regional Studies for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences West Hungarian Research Institute – WHRI.

He was the chairman of the Regional Scientific Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1996-2008, 2016-2018), the president of the Hungarian Regional Scientific Society (2011-2019). From 1993 to 2010, he was the editor-in-chief of Space and Society.

In 2009 he was inaugurated as an honorary doctor of the University of Miskolc. He served as the founder and head of the Doctoral School of Regional- and Business Administration Sciences at the Széchenyi István University (2004-2020) in Győr.

Prof. Rechnitzer serves as Scientific Adviser to iASK since 2021. His areas of research are the regional capital, urban development and the creative economy.

He is the author or co-author of more than 460 papers in international refereed journals, of which 23 were books. The number of registered references to his publications exceeds 3300. His hobby is art collection, geometric & concrete art.
