Szabolcs Marka, Member of iASK Advisory Board alongside Saswato R. Das, has co-authored an opinion piece titled “Amid ethical concerns, it’s time for AI to go back to school,” published in the South China Morning Post.
In this article, they highlight the ethical dilemmas posed by advanced artificial intelligence systems, such as the recent incident where AI-generated deepfakes of the late Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska were broadcasted. Marka and Das argue that, much like human education, AI development requires a structured curriculum that incorporates ethical reasoning, moral judgment, and an understanding of human values. They propose that universities, with their long-standing commitment to ethical inquiry and interdisciplinary expertise, are ideally positioned to take on the responsibility of “teaching” AI. By doing so, academic institutions can guide the development of AI technologies that align with societal values and promote the common good.
