Science in the Pub lecture with Zsuzsanna Márka

Zsuzsanna Márka astrophysicist and researcher of the Columbia University gave a lecture entitled “Coincidence or a real cosmic event?” at the beautiful Borterasz overlooking the famous Kőszeg vineyards. The venue was filled to the brim as Zsuzsanna Márka explained how cosmic events like supernovae, colliding neutron stars and black holes, produce multiple distinct messengers such as gravitational waves, neutrinos, and electromagnetic radiation. She said that the new methods allow us to solve these cosmic puzzles using multiple astrophysical messengers.

The lecture was followed by the discussion between Zsuzsanna Márka and Gergely Tóth, Deputy-Director of iASK. The dialogue was recorded to make the first ever episode in the iASK Podcast series in English.

Zsuzsanna Márka directly contributed to the detection of gravitational waves – a 100-year-old prediction by Einstein – by leading the manufacturing, design, and testing of a key subsystem, the timing system, for the detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).
