János Bogárdi can look back to a research, consulting and teaching career in several countries and water resources management systems in the world. During his over half a century long professional activities he worked on operational problems of reservoir and water resources systems in Zambia, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Taiwan. He addressed transboundary water sharing issues in Central Asia, advised the Mekong River Committee (predecessor of the Mekong River Commission). He has coordinated a pilot project on integrated water resources management in Germany. He coordinated the collaborative elaboration of the Aral Sea Basin and Volga visions. He co-conceived the still ongoing UNESCO flagship project PC > CP (From Potential Conflict to Cooperation Potential and organized the corresponding international conference).
As executive officer of the Global Water System Project he conceived, implemented and evaluated two questionnaire-based surveys of selected large, transboundary basins from different continents. This surveys served the purpose to figure out, how far the major challenges of sustainability, climate change, shift from food to energy crops, virtual water trade and the likes influence the management of large river basins.
He coordinated the UNEP initiative to develop water quality guidelines for ecosystems. Next to his involvement in vulnerability and disaster risk studies, Janos is known as editor of several water resources management books. Of which the last one, the Handbook of Water Resources Management: Discourses, Concepts and Examples was published by Springer NATURE. Several researchers of this proposal are co-authors of this Handbook.
